The cards contain small stone tiles with the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark on them. These runes are the oldest germanic runic alphabet, dating as far back as the second century. They are now sometimes used for fortune telling, but are also deeply atmospheric in a number of fantasy settings. JRR Tolkien based the dwarfen writing in Middle Earth on them, though he wrote on the moon map (the map in the Hobbit) using runes in a simple English cypher.
