The initial production run of Dicecards was funded through the Kickstarter crowdfunding website. The campaign is closed now, so you can't back it (you can still buy decks). But you can visit the page and have a look through the rewards that were offered, and the way the project evolved. You can also view the KickTraq information to see how the funding grew over the campaign, and how a late surge took us beyond 300% of our target.
We ended up with nearly a thousand backers, from 38 countries on 6 continents.
Kickstarter was absolutely central to this project. Firstly there was the money thing: Dicecards sat on my harddrive for years because I could not afford a production run of the cards. So Kickstarter enabled it to happen.
But the best bit of running a Kickstarter wasn't the money, it was the enthusiasm of the backers. I'd honestly not expected such a warm and supportive team of people. Folks who cheered successes and comiserated on failures (there were a couple of them during the campaign). I had suggestion after suggestion about how to make the cards better, and I was able to incorporate lots of them. And the people who's suggestions I chose not to use didn't take it personally, and still remained positive about the project. Then at the last minute, an eagle-eyed backer spotted a major error and saved the whole production run. I really felt bouyed up by the sense of community, and the cards are undeniably better for it.
